All jobs have risks. The risk on a dangerous job can lead to an injury up to a death. In America’s 10 Deadliest Jobs, Jacquelyn Smith gave informative details why these jobs are considered deadly. Logging workers is listed as the number one deadliest job, while construction laborers is listed as the number ten deadliest job. I agree that these jobs are deadly for three reasons because people are unaware of the deadly jobs, the major threat of the job, and the high number of deaths.
First, these jobs are considered deadly because the society is unaware how truly deadly these jobs are. Jacquelyn Smith stated, “If your work day sometimes seems to consist of nothing but boring meetings, coffee spills, and computer glitches, consider yourself lucky.” This statement is true to those who thinks office work environment is the same as an outdoor work environment like logging workers. The statistics of the deaths prove how people are unaware of this situation, for example of what Jacquelyn said, “Each year thousands of U.S. workers die from injuries on the job.” If people are still unaware of how deadly these jobs are, then the people will be unaware of the threats.
Next is how threatening these jobs can be, especially when there can be a death of a worker. There are many injuries that can happen on a job, such as slips and falls. This is “about 15% of all workplace injuries,” according to Jacquelyn. When the workplace is hazardous, then workers can potentially be fatally injured. This happened, according to Jacquelyn’s statistics, to approximately five hundred workers due to equipment failure. The fatally injured can sometimes turn into a death. The severe injuries can turn into a death, and if more deaths occur, then the number of deaths will rise.
Finally, the number of deaths from dangerous jobs are outrageous. These deaths often occur at a certain age. Jacquelyn’s wordings on about this, “Twenty-five percent of all work fatalities occurred among those between ages 45 and 54.” If the worker is young, 17 for example, then the death rate is much higher than the usual forties to sixties range. In the private sector, it was “proved more deadly than the public sector, with private industry accounting for 90% of fatalities” (Smith, “America’s 10 Deadliest Jobs”). Between these two sectors, the deaths are extremely high between 677 and 775. Both factors of unawareness and threats on the job caused the high death rate.
In conclusion, all three reasons why these jobs are dangerous because of people being unaware of the job, dangers of the job, and the numbers of deaths. Jacquelyn last stated that people need to stop complaining how easy their jobs are, and people need to remember that their own place could be somewhat much worse.
